Basement & Foundation Problems We Solve

Not sure what’s causing the water, cracks, odors, or other changes around your home? Start with what you’re noticing.

Know Something’s Wrong, But Not Sure What’s Causing It?

Water on the basement floor. A musty smell that won’t go away. A crack in the wall that seems to be getting bigger. Sometimes you notice the symptoms of a basement or foundation problem long before you know what’s causing it.

Pioneer Basement Solutions helps Northeast Ohio homeowners get to the source of basement moisture and foundation problems. We’ll inspect your home, explain what may be causing the issue, and recommend solutions based on what your home actually needs.

Musty or Moldy Smell

“There’s a musty smell in my basement.”

A persistent musty odor can be a sign that excess moisture is getting into your basement, even when you don’t see standing water.

What it could mean:

  • High humidity or condensation is keeping the basement damp.
  • Water may be seeping through the walls, floor, or the seam where they meet.
  • Ongoing moisture may be creating conditions where mold or mildew can grow.

Water on the Floor or Wet Basement

“I keep finding water in my basement.”

Water can enter a basement in several ways, and where you see it can provide clues about where it’s coming from.

What it could mean:

  • Groundwater may be building up beneath or around the foundation.
  • Water may be entering where the basement wall meets the floor.
  • Exterior drainage or waterproofing may no longer be keeping surface water out.

Cracks in Basement Walls

“I found a crack in my basement wall.”

Not every crack means the same thing. Its location, direction, width, and whether it is changing over time can help determine whether you’re looking at a moisture issue, normal movement, or a structural concern.

What it could mean:

  • Normal settling or movement may have caused minor cracking.
  • Water pressure or soil pressure may be stressing the foundation wall.
  • Foundation movement or settlement may require structural repair.

Bowing or Leaning Basement Walls

“My basement wall looks like it’s bowing inward.”

A wall that is visibly bowing, leaning, or shifting can indicate that pressure from the surrounding soil is pushing against the foundation.

What it could mean:

  • Hydrostatic pressure may be building up around the foundation.
  • Expansive soil or freeze-thaw cycles may be putting pressure on the wall.
  • Continued movement may compromise the wall’s structural stability.

Uneven, Sloping, or Sinking Floors

“Why do my floors feel uneven?”

Floors that slope, dip, or feel uneven underfoot can sometimes point to movement beneath the home rather than a problem with the flooring itself.

What it could mean:

  • Part of the foundation may be settling.
  • Soil beneath the foundation may no longer be providing adequate support.
  • Structural movement may be affecting the floors above.

Solutions we provide:

Sticking Doors or Windows and Cracks Upstairs

“My doors are sticking, and I’m seeing cracks upstairs.”

Foundation movement doesn’t always show up in the basement first. Changes elsewhere in your home can sometimes indicate movement below.

What it could mean:

  • Foundation settlement may be shifting portions of the home.
  • Movement may be causing door and window openings to become misaligned.
  • Cracks or gaps around walls, ceilings, windows, and doors may indicate structural movement.

Solutions we provide:

White, Chalky Residue on Basement Walls

“What’s that white powder on my basement walls?”

White or chalky deposits on concrete or masonry are commonly called efflorescence. They can appear when moisture moves through masonry and leaves mineral deposits behind as it evaporates.

What it could mean:

  • Moisture may be moving through the concrete or masonry foundation wall.
  • Water in the surrounding soil may be creating pressure against the foundation.
  • Poor drainage around the home may be contributing to ongoing moisture intrusion.

Humid or Clammy Basement

“My basement always feels damp.”

A basement can have a moisture problem without visible leaks or standing water. Persistent humidity can leave the space feeling clammy and contribute to musty odors and other moisture-related concerns.

What it could mean:

  • Excess humidity may be accumulating in the basement.
  • Moisture may be entering through foundation walls or floors.
  • Your basement may need both moisture control and waterproofing.

Basement Flooding or Sump Pump Failure

“My basement flooded, or my sump pump stopped working.”

Heavy rain, power outages, or sump pump problems can quickly turn water intrusion into a flooded basement.

What it could mean:

  • Your primary sump pump may have failed or lost power.
  • The existing drainage or pumping system may not be keeping up with incoming water.
  • Groundwater or surface water may be overwhelming the basement’s current waterproofing system.

Solutions we provide:

Crumbling or Severely Deteriorated Foundation

“My foundation blocks are crumbling.”

Foundation deterioration can progress beyond cracks or minor movement. When blocks begin crumbling, shifting, or separating as mortar deteriorates, the wall may require more extensive structural work.

What it could mean:

  • Long-term water exposure may be contributing to deterioration of the block or mortar.
  • Aging mortar joints may be weakening or separating between foundation blocks.
  • Severe deterioration or movement may be affecting the wall’s structural integrity.

“Evan and his crew really did a great job at my mother’s house. Not only was the workmanship top-notch, but the kindness and compassion shown towards my mother was greatly appreciated. It’s hard when your elderly parent has something done at their house and you can’t be there the whole time. But Evan took the time to explain step by step to her like he was part of the family. Great job Pioneer.”
